Except for Japan and S. Korea, EVERY country uses the GSM cell phone system.
In Europe, Asia and Africa most countries use the GSM 900/1800 MHz frequencies.
North, South and Central American countries use the GSM 850/1900 MHz frequencies.
You can not use CDMA cell phones like Sprint, Verizon, etc. in other countries.
The two GSM networks in the US are AT&T and T-Mobile, which both use the 850/1900 MHz frequencies.
However, the cell phones issued by AT&T and T-Mobile are programed (or LOCKED) to only work on their networks.
Even the international phones sold by these networks are LOCKED so that your only alternative when traveling is
an expensive roaming plan.
So even IF your phone has the right GSM frequencies, when you set that phone up for international roaming
they will charge you a FORTUNE for both incoming and outgoing calls.
Roaming rates can range from $2.00 to $5.00 per minute.
ALL TRAVEL READY PHONES WORK WITH ALL GSM NETWORKS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD!
Here in the US we get our cell phones from network deales. The phone may be inexpensive or even free, but the long, two year contract they come with is NOT. This is NOT how it works overseas. There most customers buy their cell phones at generic phone shops and then buy a SIM card at a convenience store or network shop.
Travel near and far and use the SAME cell phone. AND, best of all
you enjoy the VERY inexpensive calling rates offered by overseas networks.
You can pick up a SIM card in each country or set your overseas SIM card up for roaming
(this is really handy in Europe) and keep the same phone number no matter where you travel.
You might be thinking, NOOOOOOO, now I need to buy something else to make my phone work!
But take heart, buying a SIM card overseas is simple and easy.
SIM CARDS ARE SOLD EVERYWHERE!
That's right, if anyone tries to sell you a phone with a SIM card installed, RUN the other way.
It may sound easy and convenient but, so called, international or global SIM cards are huge rip-offs.
They have terrible customer service and, no matter what they say, the calling rates are MUCH higher than local networks.
REAL network SIM cards are sold EVERYWHERE overseas. In fact, look around your arrival terminal and you'll probably see
a kiosk or shop selling local SIM cards. But if you don't have time or they're closed, don't worry, just ask at the front desk of your hotel.
Chances are you won't have to walk a block. Remember, this is the system EVERYONE overseas uses.
SIM cards cost just a couple of dollars in local currency.
You can put as little or much calling credit on your SIM account as you wish either by purchasing a "top-up" or refill voucher sold at same shops
that sell SIM cards or by going online to the networks website and using your debit or credit card.
But don't buy too much calling credit, it goes a LONG way and even calls back to the US are VERY inexpensive.
EITHER WAY, IT'S EASY, EASY, EASY!
